COVID-19 Service Update 
Mind in Croydon’s Active Minds Service is open to referrals. We are increasing our in person activities and are currently delivering Allotment, Badminton, Tennis, Table Tennis and Yoga with Social distancing and COVID secure measures in place. We are aware not everyone is comfortable to resume in person activity at this time so we are continuing to deliver a selection of digital Zoom based activities alongside one-to-one telephone buddy support.

If you are interested in accessing these groups please ask any professional providing support for your health and well-being to complete the referral link on the left of this page. Once we have received your referral we will be in touch to welcome you into the service.

Active Minds

Active Minds promotes physical and mental wellbeing by supporting people with experience of a mental health problem to make healthy lifestyle changes to benefit both physical and mental health. We break down the barriers faced when taking part in sport and activities in the local community. We have trained volunteers who can support you to take part in your chosen activity. See session details below.

Active Minds run a variety of friendly accessible sports and healthy lifestyle groups across Croydon from Boxercise to gardening, cook and taste to yoga and cycling.

How to join

For the groups you need to be referred via GP, Community Mental Health Team or any other mental health professional.

The referral form can be found to the top left of this page.

Session details

We are now starting to run a few face-to-face sessions while maintaining social distancing.


Tai Chi
Take part in the mindful movements of this
ancient martial art, helping your mind and body
with the slow, sequence of moves.

Table Tennis
A chance to play table tennis among friends in our welcoming small group


Jogging Group
Absolute beginners jogging group, building up stamina and fitness with stretches and a chance to chat.

Allotment Group
Get back to nature, breathe the fresh air, catch up and grow food from scratch at our lovely allotment plot. 

Meet new people and learn a new skill with the fantastic coaches who will ensure you have a fun and friendly badminton session.

Hatha Yoga


A mix of poses and breathing to build strength and flexibility


Gentle breathing and stretching exercises.


Bikes provided, a
gentle led cycle
ride through
South Norwood
Country Park.

Get Fit and Go
If you want to exercise, but find it more of a struggle, through injury, illness or because you’re a beginner, our experienced trainer will build up your fitness and strength with specially adapted exercises.

Use gentle stretches and deep breaths to calm your mind and body, all under the guidance of our knowledgeable teacher.


Our patient and experienced teacher will guide you through ways to focus your mind, taking you into a relaxed and calm place, using breathing, visualisation and movement.


Listening to calming music and a soothing voice will guide you into a place of pure calm. Our lovely teacher will help you to build skills that you can use to relax your mind and body.

Waiting Times

The service aims to contact new clients within 48 hours and make an initial appointment within two to three weeks. Some activities are run on specific dates so there may be a period of time to wait until the group starts.

Additional support

Buddy Service

Want to try a new sport or physical activity with Active Minds or elsewhere in Croydon? Feel that you need someone to support you until you have built your confidence to go alone?

Then get a Buddy to support you. We can pair you with a volunteer who can work with you to achieve your goals.

  • You will be offered an initial meeting, this is an opportunity for you to discuss your interests, and explore the different options available.
  • If you would like a buddy to attend sessions with you we can match you up with someone.
  • You will receive support until you have developed the confidence and motivation to continue independently.
  • This service is provided for up to 14 weeks.

Volunteer with Active Minds

Would you like to support people who have experienced mental health problems in accessing their chosen activity with the aim that they are able to continue with that activity after the Peer Navigating time has finished. This will be done through accompanying them to their activity and working with the plan agreed in your first meeting.

Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity (MHASPA) Training

This three-hour workshop designed to give coaches, volunteers, sport administrators and front-of-house staff the confidence to support people with experience of mental health problems to be more active. Find out more on our training page.


I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a fresh way to relieve nervous energy and stress, whilst getting fit and having fun. If I can do it so can you!

Before I started the Boxercise programme I was suffering from agoraphobia, low self-esteem and depression, I wasn’t working or leaving my house other than to attend medical appointments. I can honestly say that the Boxercise programme, coupled with the support and encouragement of all involved has had a major impact in helping me regain ownership of my own life. I feel much fitter, more confident, am eating and sleeping better and I have even started permitted work which is a major step forward in my continued recovery. I will also be joining Dukes gym and continuing with the Boxercise. I really cannot stress enough the positive impact the Boxercise programme has had and I hope many more people will benefit from future sessions.
