Mind in Croydon is a Disability Confident employer

7.7 million working age people in the UK have a disability and Mind in Croydon is actively committed to recruiting and retaining disabled people, including people living with a mental illness. We’ve signed up to the national Disability Confident Scheme which encourages and supports employers to make the most of the talents disabled people can bring to our workplaces. The scheme has replaced the Two Ticks: Positive about Disabled People scheme. It has been developed by employers and disabled people’s representatives, working together to change attitudes, behaviour and cultures in businesses, networks and communities, and to realise the benefits of inclusive recruitment practices.

Peter Phillips, our Employment & Social Inclusion Services manager, chairs Croydon’s Disability Confident Action Group (DCAG). He said “It’s an honour to be involved in the DCAG partnership and to work with local employers and disabled peoples’ groups to improve diversity and inclusion in the workplace”.

Time to Talk Day from Time to Change is a chance for thousands of us – schools, workplaces and communities – to join together on one day to tackle the silence and the stigma that still surround mental health. And we won’t let the fact that we can’t see each other face-to-face stop us.

They are hosting a day of online activities that anyone can join from home – no tickets required! They are creating a space where their supporters can come together and feel the power of being part of something much bigger.

Whether you’re watching as part of a group or simply enjoying the event yourself, they want you to go away feeling inspired to talk about mental health.

Carers Drop-In Weekly Sessions In light of the cu Carers Drop-In Weekly Sessions

In light of the current Pandemic we will be providing additional support to Carers in the Borough of Croydon with a Carers drop-in weekly support session. This is in addition to the Carers monthly psycho-educational group which will be on the 1st February at 10.30-11.15am. February’s topic is on ‘Managing Challenging Behaviour’.
If you are a carer, 18 and over and live, work or are educated in the borough of Croydon, or if the person you care for is 18 or over, lives, works, or is educated in the borough of Croydon you are eligible to attend the Carers Drop-In groups via Zoom starting on Monday 8th February 2021 @ 6.30pm (for one hour) and will be held weekly at the same time and day.
The idea is to give Carers the opportunity to talk about, share experiences and concerns about caring.   We acknowledge that some Carers may not have much support at this time due to the lockdown restrictions and also with this being an evening session, Carers that work during the day will have a chance to gain support outside working hours.

Now more than ever, we need to take a moment, so Now more than ever, we need to take a moment, so let's take a moment together.
Over 250 personalities have endorsed the use of their pictures by Ray Burmiston for the Take A Moment exhibition including Mind's President Stephen Fry.
The collection has been curated from a decade of outtakes from Ray's studio, hundreds of moments where he asks his subjects to close their eyes for a few seconds, to refresh their connection with the camera, capturing powerful moments of self-reflection.
And now, mashed together with your selfies, Ray hopes it will expand from hundreds of photos to thousands of photos and promote the message: 'we're all in this together', whilst raising vital funds and awareness for leading UK mental health charity, Mind.

Ellis Jurado, 12, lives in Redhill and supports Mi Ellis Jurado, 12, lives in Redhill and supports Mind in Croydon each year with fundraising events.  This year he set himself an Art Challenge to produce 31 drawings in 31 days in October and raised a whopping £1,250 online – 125% of his original target.
Ellis’ Mum, Lucie, said “We knew that World Mental Health Awareness Day was 10th October, so decided it was the perfect month for him to complete his “Inktober” challenge. We set up an online fundraising page and hoped to raise £500 for Mind. Within the first 8 days Ellis had already hit £500. So we increased the target to £1,000 and by 31st October and 31 fabulous drawings later he managed to raise a whopping £1,250!”
This fantastic fundraising effort will go towards supporting the services that Mind in Croydon currently provides to people and families in Croydon, including social groups and activities, many of which have moved online during the Covid-19 crisis.
Philippa Thompson, Chief Executive at Mind in Croydon, said “We are all so impressed and delighted with what Ellis has done to raise money to support people with mental health issues in Croydon; good mental health often starts with kindness and hope, and that’s what Ellis has given to all of us.”

Mind Policy and campaigns – Zoom meeting with Ju Mind Policy and campaigns – Zoom meeting with Justin Tomlinson (the Minister for Disabled People)

“Ahead of the anticipated Government Green Paper & National Strategy for Disabled People we had the opportunity to meet virtually in an event hosted by National Mind with the Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson.
We outlined the challenges that Mind in Croydon’s clients experience with the benefits system and how Covid-19 has made navigating the system even harder for many people with mental health issues. People with lived experience of mental health also took part and gave real life examples of how the benefits system creates sometimes insurmountable barriers for them.
Our work is influencing the development of what we hope will be a better benefits system that works for and with people experiencing mental ill health.”

Fairfield House Food Deliveries by London Fire Bri Fairfield House Food Deliveries by London Fire Brigade

8 weeks; 274 food parcels and 248 hot meals, delivered by the Fire Service. £625 raised. With a massive effort  from staff and members of the Croydon Fire Service we are proud to share photos of our final food deliveries last Friday 5th June.
This initiative has now come to an end due to our partners within the Croydon Fire Service needing to resume normal duties.
We continue to work to support those people living in Croydon with mental health problems.

Reminder regarding our Addiscombe Charity Shop Du Reminder regarding our Addiscombe Charity Shop

Due to the government guidelines our charity shop in Addiscombe currently remains closed.
We recently had a complaint regarding items left on the pavement outside the shop. Please do not leave donations outside the door as we will not be taking them during this time.
We look forward to receiving them once the shop reopens.
In the meantime, if you would like to make a financial donation you can do so by visiting https://www.mindincroydon.org.uk/fundraising/donate/
