Peer Support In Reach recognised at the Lambeth Civic Awards

Last night we saw a member of our Peers Support In Reach team be recognised in the Lambeth Civic Awards under the Health & Wellbeing category. This award recognises the work and care delivered by people and organisations supporting Lambeth residents to maintain healthy lives which in turn increases resilience and physical and mental wellbeing.

Angela works as a Senior Peer Support Worker, drawing upon her own experiences to provide support. While it may not appear significant to some, for Angela this represents a substantial accomplishment. She is a peer worker with her own lived experiences, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in Lambeth, who have been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The people who Angela supports often experiences “treatment-resistant psychosis”, sometimes alongside personality disorders, addiction, and difficult behaviours. She supports them to acquire the skills necessary for life back in the community. She does this with compassion, professionalism, and dedication. Although Angela works alongside NHS staff, she offers a unique perspective, being open about and drawing from her own lived experiences.

This year, Angela initiated a Self-Care Club aimed at helping people prioritise their well-being, focusing on aspects such as hygiene, sleep, and social interaction. She introduces a nuanced approach to understanding what care can entail, and when the men expressed a desire to spend more time together but felt overwhelmed by the pressure to socialise, she established a Movie Club, allowing them to enjoy films together in a relaxed setting.
